<image:title>Why Cambodia? - A Hard History</image:title>
<image:caption>The Khmer Rouge genocide (1975-1978) followed by the Vietnamese occupation (1979-1989) resulted in the deaths of 1.5 million people and displacement of another 3 million. These events destroyed societal fabric and norms, decimated knowledge bases, and crippled infrastructure. The impact is still felt today by the next generations of Cambodian people.</image:caption>

In addition to the school structure, we added a courtyard for village gatherings, enhanced water supply, and washroom facilities, and established an agricultural planting program. The 2024-2025 building program included additional classrooms for Krov, kitchen facilities and renewal of large portions of the roof structures.</image:caption>

Our teams were instrumental in aiding the design, construction, and funding of the project. In 2025 we added a new wing to the existing structure to facilitate new programs. <image:title>Our History - A Unique Place</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s funny, as you travel the world it’s easy to visit the sights and walk the well trodden path. Doing that you can miss what a place is truly all about. While visiting in 2015 our guide took us off the beaten path and local people invited us into their lives. By 2016 we knew we needed to help and have been able to connect worlds in ways we never would have dreamt possible. — Founders, Murray and Val Nunns</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Philosophy - Cambodians Helping Themselves</image:title>
<image:caption>One Degree Forward works in conjunction with the New Bridge Foundation to maximize and accelerate its vision for improving village life. The New Bridge Foundation was established through the sheer force of will of some very determined villagers with a desire to improve the lives of the next generation of children living in their community. Through their own hard-won education, they saw that their goals of clean water and improved schooling were within reach if they rolled up their sleeves and laid the groundwork themselves. Their story is Cambodia’s story. They have a determined spirit and want to build a path for others to follow. No big organization; no offices; no Range Rovers; just mopeds and a desire to build better lives for their people.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Many charities and NGOs are plagued with issues like top heavy admin expenses, misdirected funds, or fraud at the delivery point. Every dollar we raise goes directly into our projects and education initiatives, and every penny is accounted for. We work with our project managers to ensure that all costs, capital, and operation expenses in Cambodia are verifiable and well documented.</image:caption>

<image:title>Water Projects - Wells, Filters & Sanitation Improvements</image:title>
<image:caption>The focus of this program is to provide or replace shallow wells with deeper wells that do not have bacterial contamination, do not dry up after the rainy season, and are more mechanically reliable. To date we have supplied villagers in Krov and Samrong over 55 wells, 75 filters, and 15 latrines, all of which are still in service. In 2025 we initiated a broader clean water program. The schools now provide clean water to any villager in need.</image:caption>

<image:title>Water Projects - Water Conditions</image:title>
<image:caption>Approximately 70% of villagers have a well that they access for water; the remainder source water from ponds, rivers, ditches, and dugouts. Only 50% of families have proper sanitation facilities. Of the existing wells, many are too shallow and contaminated with E. coli and other bacterial forms which thrive from the lack of proper sanitation and the Cambodian heat. Water sources can have mineral contamination and require filtration prior to human consumption.</image:caption>

<image:title>Water Projects - Water Technology</image:title>
<image:caption>Our wells are typically 75-100 feet in depth, cased, can be hand pumped, and are easy to maintain. For the Samrong and Krov Schools that service a larger population, deeper wells have been drilled with higher capacity and electric pumps. These wells are supplemented with tank storage, extra filtering, UV treatment, and water quality monitoring on a quarterly basis. Each well-site is equipped with CASWT designed passive bio-filters which eliminates 98% of contaminants. Every family that receives water support is educated on clean water protocols and given a maintenance contact in case of any issues. Wells can also be adapted to electrical pumps for small plot irrigation for villagers.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Why get involved? Having visited the country prior to getting involved, I came back home after the first visit and realized how poorly this country have been treated over many decades. In my experience the people of Cambodia are amazingly resilient and resourceful. Seeing their deep desire to make a better life for themselves with what little they had prompted me to get involved. Seeing their strong work ethic only motivated me more to see how I could get involved and be a small part of their success in creating a better life with them. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO ME? Making a positive impact in their lives in a meaningful and long-lasting manner. Not just sending money to temporarily fix a problem but building long term solutions so future generations will benefit as well. Knowing the resources put forward will go directly to the ground making a greater and direct impact in their lives</image:caption>

<image:caption>Why get involved? Being asked to join One Degree Canada as the project was a step or two out of its infancy was a moment of true serendipity. Having gone through some massive life changes myself and growing a deep connection with Murray and Val I was presented with the opportunity to make a positive impact on a great number of people and generations to come. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO ME? Though thoroughly cliche, I never imagined the impact the Cambodian villagers would, and will continue to have on me.</image:caption>

<image:title>Programs - Agriculture Program</image:title>
<image:caption>In 2024, the decision was made to develop agricultural capacity at both schools. Samrong is focused on garden crops and supplying village needs as well as developing skills in agriculture. The program now supports both the food program at the school and other Cambodian schools in the surrounding region. They now have the capability of producing upwards of four crops a year and are continuing to expand the program in 2025. The Krov school land and terrain were more suited for tree growth. In 2024, we undertook a project recontouring the land, which both improved drainage and set the stage for the creation of a significant orchard of local fruits right on the property. This will significantly supplement the extensive food program at the school as well as support food supplies for some of the villagers.</image:caption>

<image:title>Programs - VISION CARE</image:title>
<image:caption>In February 2025 with the support FYI Doctors and Canadian Vision Care, a program was undertaken to screen village elders, staff, students, and other members of the community for vision-related issues. The team saw 1047 patients, distributed over 700 pairs of reading, prescription, and sunglasses, plus identified patients that required specialty prescriptions and had those glasses made. Serious health issues were forwarded directly to the provincial health authority. Twenty patients were identified as good candidates for cataract operations. An NGO has been identified that will handle the logistics of the operations, and we are fundraising to help support the completion of this program. We anticipate repeating this with villagers in 2028.</image:caption>
